WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

BIBLE TEXT:  1 Cor 13:4-7 (ESV):  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:

Love is patient

“But God, don’t you know that I have heard “mommy” ninety times in the past 10 minutes, and I am hiding in the bathroom, just trying to have a few minutes to clear my thoughts?”

Love is kind

“God, you clearly were not witness to my day.”

Love does not envy or boast

“Clearly, Lord, you forget that my car is 14 years old and I haven’t bought new curtains in over a decade.”

Love doesn’t insist on its own way

“Can I have my way every once in a while?!?!

Love endures all things

“Does survival count?!? Because, God, that is pretty much what I am doing…enduring and surviving.”

The words fly off the page and right into my opposition. Quick and true, the words cut like the surgeon’s scalpel, leaving me feeling exposed. Instructions for love result in the obvious truth: I am a failure at loving. Devotion leads to disaster and once again, I don’t measure up…

Oh but then…FOR GOD SO LOVED….

For God so loved, my shortcomings are irrelevant, my failure to achieve is His opportunity for success. His strength…my weakness.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: For God so loved, my imperfections are covered by his unfailing grace. My striving won’t lead to success, a list of do’s and don’ts won’t earn me an award. It is only because “God so loved” that His grace is made available, and I can love the way it is intended: truly bearing, believing and hoping in all things.

PRAYER:  Worthy God, Help me to be more aware of your grace and the freedom I have in it. Let me love knowing that it isn’t mine, but your love through me, that is the love found in First Corinthians. May your grace daily transform both my actions and my interactions.
