BIBLE TEXT:  “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” – Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

PERSONAL REFLECTION: I hate seafood. I am absolutely disgusted by it. But a few months ago, I tried shrimp for the first time in years, and surprise, surprise…I liked it.

As I was reflecting on this crazy year of my life I began to realize that for me this has been the year of trying new things. Now, as crazy as trying shrimp might be, the craziest new thing I have tried this year is full-time entrepreneurship. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It has been the most exciting, the most empowering, and the most difficult thing I have ever done. However, regardless of how stressful it has been at times, I am constantly reminded that this is the right path for me many times by my wonderful and supportive husband.

Another new endeavor has been the adventure of expeditious noveling (that means I’m trying to write a novel…in 30 days). This one has been challenging but actually quite fun (although, ask me how I feel about this one again at the end of this month).

My point is if we stop trying new things our lives become routine, and worse than that they become stagnant. The way I see it there is only one reason not to try something new, and that is fear. Whether it’s fear of giving up your time, or fear of being unsuccessful, or fear of being uncomfortable, it all boils down to the same thing. Fear has interfered in plenty of my life decisions, but this year especially, I am discovering time and time again that stepping outside of that barrier is more than worth it.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: Now, I’m not saying everyone go quit your day jobs and open a small business, but God has called us to step outside of our comfort zones… to do the things that seem impossible and not to be hindered by fear of failure. You are not too old. You are not too young. You are not too poor. You are not too busy. Push those excuses aside. Bury them in the ground because that’s what they are…excuses. It’s time to become active not only in our personal lives but in our Kingdom cause. Our God has blessed us with strength and with power, and if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31 *Bonus Verse*) What is there to fear?

So today I encourage you to get active and try something new–be it bungee jumping or talking to someone about your Savior or yes, even shrimp.

Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is.” – H. Jackson Browne

PRAYER:  God, thank you for encouraging me when I am fearful. I pray that you would help me to become active for you. Fill my spirit with your power and your strength, and give me the courage to push fear aside and try new things. Amen.
