BIBLE TEXT: All this is for your benefit, so that the GRACE that is reaching more and more people may cause THANKSGIVING to overflow to the glory of God. –2 Corinthians 4:15 (emphasis mine)
“A life contemplating the blessings of Christ becomes a life acting the love of Christ.” –Ann Voskamp
Grace=charis, favor extended.
Thanksgiving=eucharistia, the giving of thanks for God’s grace.
Grace. It is the axis on which our lives turn. It is the very divine, expressed nature of Christ himself. The Eucharist. The sacrament. Gathering around the table is more than just a sign of physical hunger, a need to be nourished…it is the inward desire to feed the soul, to accept the grace offered as both redemptive and replenishing. Without grace there could be no gratitude, no thanksgiving, as grace is wholly contained in our response back to the Creator. As we sit around the table this year, reminiscing of years gone by, loved ones, and familiar places, we are acting out the physical iteration of a spiritual principle: remember, give thanks…the bread, the wine…the body and the blood.
Gratitude is truly the expression of a life overflowing with grace.
PERSONAL APPLICATION: Help me to remember that “thanksgiving” does not exist without grace. I cannot offer that which I haven’t received. May I grow in grace so that thankfulness will overflow in my life and bring glory to our King.
Pray Psalm 100:
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness, come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his.
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
