BIBLE TEXT: Romans 8:28 (The Message): Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. (emphasis mine)
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Guilty as charged. I read this verse and often turn it into my own personal promise rather than a Biblical one: nothing can go wrong; God works everything out for MY good. It’s easy to shift the words ever so slightly and turn this into a pixie dust moment. Whatever life throws at us, God swoops in like a heavenly Tinker Bell and problems disappear. The truth, however, is a harsher but more beautiful reality. God will work something good out of every detail but it may not feel good in the moment, and it may, in fact, be painful sometimes. My personal tragedy, discomfort, or loss may actually bring good in the bigger picture. That may not feel comforting at first blush, but what a relief to know that my time on earth is for a plan and a purpose.
I’m reading a lot lately on the grander scheme — God’s larger plan — and the interwoven connectedness between present and eternity…I don’t want to mistake momentary trials as a “missed” promise of God but want to learn to see them as part of the design, a thread on this tapestry that is being woven since the beginning of time.
PERSONAL APPLICATION: I want to dive fully into the nature and goodness of God, to see His grace worked out — past, present, and future. It’s easy to treat God like the man behind the curtain: push a few levers, pull a few strings, and out pops the life you want — tidy, neat and wrapped in a bow. I don’t believe that neat and tidy is how God always likes life, but I am more assured, more confident than ever, that the life He has is constantly being worked for good….not just my good, but HIS good.
PRAYER: God, help me to trust fully in your plan, your goodness, and your grace. The more I know of your nature and your character, the more I can rest in the assurance of all your plans and promises for me. Help me to know you more. Amen
