BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 3:7-10 (NIV): Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Why is it when we struggle with a situation or sin in our lives it is so difficult to share it with another person? Why is it so hard for us to open up? Why is it so hard for us to be vulnerable? It all goes back to Adam and Eve. When they sinned they realized they were exposed and their first inclination was to COVER UP! Today we are no different. We put on our church clothes, happy face masks, come to church, and parade around like we got it all together when really underneath we are struggling, hoping no one sees the real us. Scared to open up and afraid of what people may think, we put on our fig leaves (examples: fear of rejection, distrust, judgment, acceptance, religion, success, shame, guilt, disappointment, pride). God wants to bring us back to a place where we are unashamed. Genesis 2:25: the man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame – a place where we can walk in the cool of the day and have open communication not only with God but our spouse and friends. But to do this we have to stop hiding behind our fig leaves.
PERSONAL APPLICATION: On the outside it looked like I had it all together — the perfect life, beautiful wife, great kids, financial stability. To the world I was successful and to the body of Christ I was blessed, but inside I was battling an addiction that I could not overcome nor control, covering it up by any means…. my fig leaves. What are your fig leaves?
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you would forgive us for anything we have hidden and pray that you would reveal to us the fig leaves in our lives that we use to cover up. Give us the courage to be vulnerable so that we can get back to a place where we are unashamed and can walk in the cool of the day in communion with You. I thank you for your love and your mercy that is new every morning. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom!
