BIBLE TEXT: Malachi 2:1-2: “And now, O priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not hear, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to My name,” says the Lord of hosts, “ I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart.”
In my Bible study class, we are studying the Jews that came back to Jerusalem after the exile to Babylon that was a result of their disobedience. They spent 70 years away from Jerusalem, the city had been destroyed, and they were rebuilding it with only a remnant. Nehemiah was sent back to Jerusalem to lead the rebuilding of the walls and gates of the city to give the people safety and protection. God moved so miraculously that the wall was finished in 52 days! The attention then moved to the temple and the way the people should be worshiping God. They were excited to dedicate the wall and hear the word of God, but as it happened, they moved away from what God had for them over time. There was corruption among the priests with regards to the goods brought to the temple and the use of the temple. God laid out specifics as to how it should be done but corruption set in. In Malachi, God admonished the priests to “take it to heart” and make the proper changes. God demanded the best in sacrifices and deserved reverence from His people.
I know this all sounds harsh but I believe there is something for us today. God deserves our best. He gave us His best when His son, Jesus, died on the cross for us. He was the perfect, unblemished, and final sacrifice. I know I get busy with everyday life and end up giving God lame sacrifices and leftovers. I want to show Him that I love Him by giving Him the honor that He’s due and “taking it to heart” to give glory to His name through my relationship with Him. Here’s a question for you: Do you give your area of ministry your best effort so that He feels loved and honored by the way you serve Him?
Heavenly Father, I come before you with a humble heart, recognizing the huge sacrifice made for me on the cross. Help me to give my best to you in everything that I do so that Your name will be glorified. I want to honor You with my life and give You the reverence due Your holy name. Amen
