So you want to be a world changer…

BIBLE TEXT:  Ephesians 4:2:  Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:  Look across social media and you will encounter well-meaning messages encouraging you to “do random acts of kindness” and spread love in order to “change the world.”  There is nothing wrong with this. Humble and gentle kindness is really, really wonderful and it has the power to impact people in a positive way. I’m going to be honest with you, though. I’ve always been bothered by the idea that being “kind to strangers” will “change the world.”   Yes, paying for the drive-thru Starbucks order of the person in the car behind you is sweet and will no doubt make someone’s day brighter, but if “changing the world” is your goal, you have to start by extending kindness to your own family members and the people who are closest to you.

Don’t get me wrong. It is heartwarming to go out of your way to be kind to strangers. It is also very easy. A stranger is a stranger. You don’t have any sort of history with them. They have never hurt you, betrayed you, insulted you, or disappointed you.  A stranger will lovingly thank you because they don’t have any sort of history with you, either. But your family and close ones….that’s different, isn’t it?  Here’s the thing: the decision to show kindness, gentleness, goodness, forgiveness to people who have disappointed you or hurt you counts BIG TIME.  It counts for the giver and for the receiver. It’s transformational for all involved and it is absolutely WORLD CHANGING.  It changes you and it changes them in a deep, profound way.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: Read the verse again:  Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.  The command to “do unto others as you would have them do to you” is probably more difficult when it comes to your family and close ones, yet it is within that very group of people that the command is most powerful. Remember that you yourself have faults (nope, you are definitely not perfect) and receiving grace for those faults is a great gift.

PRAYER:  Father God, open our eyes so that we can see and open our ears so that we can hear. Help us to see with Your eyes and listen with Your ears.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
