Satisfaction (You Can Get Some)

FiveChairsHeadBY:  TODD KING

BIBLE TEXT:  Ephesians 1:18-21:  (v18) The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, (v19) And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, (v20) Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, (v21)  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: I’ve heard it said that people waste a large part of their lives looking for ways to improve it. About this, I have no doubt … In fact, I can testify. In one instance (among many others), I believed a twenty-two foot Ranger boat would get me what Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones haven’t found since they made their search public in 1965. Surely a mobile fishing platform would add the words (you know the tune) “I found me some … Satisfaction” and close the loop on that wickedly genius and hopelessly repetitive refrain.

I have imagined the wind in my face as I trimmed it out … 75 mph … yes! Rooster tail rising and fanning out high in the air then returning to its source as scattered droplets across the surface of the churning water behind. It seems so satisfying in my mind’s eye. Very satisfying … until I get to “‘the catch.” In this case, the catch would be a sudden and massive depletion of monetary funds in exchange for a rapidly depreciating asset that carries a relatively high and ongoing cost of operation and maintenance. There you go, “I’ll take groceries and school tuition for two-hundred Alex.” Seems to always be a catch … and we’re back where we started: “I can’t get no … Satisfaction.

In the time it took me to write this, I would guess 15 e-mails offered me a variety of sure-fire satisfaction methods. Each of which were promptly sent to the trash folder. The world has no shortage of suggestions. We are bombarded by a repetitive and continuous scatter-shot assault. For each hopeful pellet distributed, there is a joy-snatching catch. And so it goes … “done, done, on to the next one,” a futile quest for an elusive state of consciousness. Satisfaction that “can’t be got” — just when you think you’ve reached it — the line moves out of range and joy morphs to folly. Such is the progression … with one exception. What exception? Glad you asked and here you go: understanding that the power God demonstrated in the resurrection of Christ is made available to believers so they can live a joyous and fulfilled life.

IF (this is your first time to this point) THEN

please feel free to read that last statement again

please proceed to the next paragraph

Let “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” that we can have satisfaction. It is there for the taking. Not in riding in a Ranger boat, not in Doctor Oz’s diet pill, but rooted in the knowledge and understanding of the power God demonstrated when He decommissioned and forever disposed of the enemy’s greatest weapon … death.

Let “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” and strive to understand (at the core of your being) the power God demonstrated and made available to us.

Let “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” and know the “hope of his calling.” This is not ‘hope’ in the sense of wishful thinking, this is ‘hope’ in the sense of “CONFIDENT EXPECTATION.”

Let “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” and rest in understanding that the same power God used to conquer death is available to each of us!

PERSONAL APPLICATION:  There is joy to be found and satisfaction to “be got” through enlightened eyes of understanding. With them I can confidently expect the lasting satisfaction and fulfilling joy I crave. No fine print to read, no money down, no interest rates, no hidden fees. Guaranteed, without a catch.

PRAYERFather, as the world bombards me with satisfaction scams, open my eyes of understanding so that I may focus on the only source of true fulfillment. The confident expectation that the limitless power demonstrated to me, by You through Jesus Christ is indeed made available to me by the same. It is in His name I do pray. Amen.
