Oradea, Romania

Romania is situated in the southeastern part of Central Europe and is bordered by Hungary to the west and the Black Sea to the east. Teeming with splendid mountains (part of the Alps!), beautiful rolling hills, fertile plains and numerous rivers and lakes, the fauna is one of the richest in Europe. Juxtaposed against the beauty of the landscape lies a more sinister side of Romania.  Because of laws established during a communist regime, Romanians were forced to have children.  Many of these children were unwanted, but the government encouraged parents to put them into orphanages where the government would “take care of them.”  Although communist rule ended many years ago, this trend has continued.  At least 1,000 children are annually abandoned – many of them by poverty-stricken teenage mothers, 60% of whom are unmarried.  When the first cameras entered the Romanian orphanages in 1990, the world was stunned by what they saw – pictures of starving, freezing, unloved children.

For most of these children, there are vast developmental issues. Almost none are capable of making it on their own. Having been taught nothing about money, work ethic, how to find a job or a place to live, paying bills, manners or even simple hygiene, they often become jobless and homeless on the streets with other orphans. They beg and steal for food, become addicted to drugs and, worst of all, are lured into the underground world of prostitution and human trafficking.  In fact, Bucharest has the dark distinction of being the pedophiles’ capital of Europe.

Corey and Diana Burba founded Romanian Orphan Ministries (ROM) whose mission reads: “Bringing the forgotten orphan children in Romania to faith in Christ, discipling them, and equipping them to be productive citizens and Christians.”  Their biggest project by far, The Beauty from Ashes Center located in the elegant city of Oradea, was created to both house orphans and create a family-style environment bathed in love.  It is here the children receive education, life-skills training, Bible studies, and most of all, genuine love.  Additionally, through the greeting card program they created, Corey and Diana are able to help fund part of their ministry and teach the young people invaluable money management skills at the same time. After experiencing Christ’s love poured out through the Burbas, many of “their children” are enrolled in university programs such as nursing, graphic design, and even neurosurgery!

The work we do in Romania is unlike anything else we’ve ever physically done, but this work is not about the physical.  It’s about loving on some kids who desperately need to know that they are valued.
