LIMITING BELIEFS

BIBLE TEXT: Gen 26:1-3: “Now there was a famine in the land–besides the earlier famine of Abraham’s time–and Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines in Gerar.  The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.  Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you.”

Gen 26:12: “Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.”

PERSONAL REFLECTION: I absolutely love the start of a new year.  I use the calendar to reflect on successes and failures from the previous year and to refocus my life. I also look to the Lord for a theme for the upcoming year. The word that has been impressed on me is “Jubilee.” We serve a God of Limits. He has set limits on our lives not to hurt us, but to help us. Night and day (we need rest), water and land, what we can eat (the tree of good and evil), and of course those famous 10 limits known as the 10 Commandments.

A limit is a boundary or point as to extent. I am learning that what we think is true can determine our actions. Tony Robbins calls these thoughts “Limiting Beliefs.” If you have not heard the news lately, we have been in a financial famine in our country. We call it a recession. In my focus passage, there was a famine as well. Yet, in spite of the famine, Isaac “planted crops.”  What? Plant when nothing grows or produces a harvest? Don’t try to sell your house or start a business or ministry, there is a recession that limits our actions, right? Yet God said, “live in the land where I tell you to live (where there is a famine) and I will be with you and will bless you.”

Our beliefs in what we see and what we experience can limit our actions. I know for a fact, that recession (famine) is the time for possession in the lives of God’s people! History proves that fact.  We limit ourselves by our own beliefs, ideas, and creativity, things that society tells us, the news media, our parents, our heritage, our experiences.  We even limit God to the things we read in the Bible. I have found that we analyze the scripture to the extent that if it did not occur in scripture, then God does not do it that way or we say, “it does not work that way anymore.” This is especially true when it comes to signs and wonders. Our beliefs are limited to the extent of the fact we have not seen or experienced it.

I believed for half of my life that gifts of the Spirit did not exist. Why? A pastor told me that they did not exist so I believed it. Your parents may have also told you things that have limited your beliefs even about yourself. We are inundated with words that tend to limit our beliefs and thus our actions. Well folks, here’s a fresh word for you to begin your 2012. There is no recession, no famine in our God.  In fact, for the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit WITHOUT LIMIT.  (John 3:34)

I would encourage you to join me in 2012 to remove the limits of our beliefs AND our actions. As we leave one year to enter another we cannot change the past, but we can change the future.  The enemy of our soul would have us enter 2012 limited by what we see and hear.  Let’s choose to walk by faith and not by sight. Let’s choose together to take the limits off  God and plant during this famine in and through the body of Christ at Life Assembly! And in the same year reap the hundredfold Jubilee in 2012. The Rest of Our Lives, Will Be the BEST of Our Lives.  Live Limitless!

So true, Darrell! God is never limited by famines or recessions so we, who live in His Power, aren’t either.
