“IT IS FINISHED.”

BIBLE TEXT: ”When Jesus had tasted it, he said “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”   –John 19:30

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Many years ago I was involved in a year-long Bible study of the book of John, verse by verse. There is so much to learn from John and the more you study it the more you learn. At the end of the year one of the questions asked was what our favorite verse was. That was hard because I had learned so much but after much thought, the last words Jesus said on the cross hit me — “It is finished!” — three simple words with so much power. Over the years I have thought about these words and what they mean to me. Jesus was about to face the biggest and most important battle when He was at his weakest, but before it even started He declared that it was finished. He was the victor!

What does the “It” mean? The word “It” is the one with a chronic illness, loss of a loved one, a devastating terminal diagnosis, the broken marriage, the loss of a job, a financial crisis, and the list goes on. The closer we are to Christ the more Satan throws at us. Satan’s goal is to weaken us to the point where we give up, stop praying, reading God’s word and even going to church. Just as Jesus declared victory, we have the power to declare victory over the schemes of Satan.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: Being a follower of Christ does not mean that our lives are going to be perfect and without struggles. I have hit lows throughout my life. Some have been devastating and some were just a struggle meant to bring me down. During those times my best defense was using the Word and lots of prayer.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, Thank you for setting the example of using the Word of God as the means to fight our struggles and battles. As you declared the victory over Satan from the cross, I now declare victory over Satan and his schemes against me! Amen
