Holding Patterns, Delays, and God’s Will

BIBLE TEXT: “The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?” (Proverbs 20:24 NLT)

PERSONAL REFLECTION: I can remember being on board an airplane many years ago, so anxious to land in St. Louis only to be told that our plane was in a holding pattern because the fog had become so thick in the area. I really did not like the delay but understood it was for our safety. At the appointed time the pilot began our descent. The fog was so thick that you could not see anything outside the window until you were on the ground. I was so thankful that every precaution and step was followed to get our plane safely on the ground, even though it was not in the timing I had desired.

I have been in a holding pattern of sorts for the last few years. My family and I moved to Nashville at the end of 2011. I firmly believed that God would quickly open a door back into full-time ministry after I left my position at a church in St. Louis. It did not happen. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. We became family at Life Assembly and truly enjoyed every minute of it, but I knew that God would have me return to full-time ministry eventually. During this time, the five of us lived with my in-laws in a small home of only three bedrooms. I also ended up working in retail management to make ends meet while finishing my Bachelor in Christian Leadership online. Every day I prayed that God would move us on from this “holding pattern!”

As I write this, I have just finished my first day as student pastor at Ridgeview Church in Rockwall, Texas. God is faithful as He always is! He has landed our plane in the right place in the right time.

PERSONAL APPLICATION: Even though I questioned Him so much over the last few years, I recognize His sovereignty over my life. When we fully surrender to Him, we must trust Him with our journey knowing that He sees through the fog that we cannot see through. He has a plan so just enjoy the ride knowing He’s got this! Don’t begrudge the journey!

PRAYER: Father God, I cherish the promises you have made to me. I know that you have a perfect plan in place and that you see through all the darkness, difficulties, and disappointments. Help me to trust you completely and believe that your timing and your way are better than what I might want. Put a joy in my heart about where I am today on the journey, one that will remind me that I can be content just being with You in this place and time. Help me to be aware of the opportunities I have today to share Your light and love with those I work with, live with, and fellowship with.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

My family and I began attending Life Assembly in January 2012. My wife, Tawana, and I have three children: Victoria (14), Lana (9), and Jensen (3). We both served in the youth ministry at Life. Tawana helped to coordinate and direct Trunk-or-Treat in 2013 & 2014. I served over the Connections area for a little over a year as well. Our season at Life came to an end recently as I accepted a full-time ministry position in Texas. We truly loved being at Life and love our family there! Thanks for letting us journey with you!

Love & blessings!
