BIBLE TEXT: 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.”
PERSONAL REFLECTION: My father-in-law, John Cooke, passed away just a few years ago. He knew he was dying. In the weeks before his death he set aside a time of prayer with each of his four children and their respective families. I remember clearly standing in his living room with my wife, our three children, and my mother-in-law. We all took time to pray individually for, and with, the Reverend John Cooke.
At the time I thought what a blessing it must be to have your grandchildren, now adults, pray so authentically and boldly because they have a relationship with God all their own. They were comfortable in prayer because it has been woven into their lives.
Days before his death John was asked by one of his sons how he was doing. John raised his hand off his Hospice bed and with a clenched fist, signifying victory, declaring that God had been faithful to him his entire life and could not ask for anything more. He went home 3 days later.
PERSONAL APPLICATION: John finished strong and left a legacy for his entire family to build upon. He was able to do this by walking one day at a time with our God. Although his body had failed him, spiritually he was sprinting towards the finish line.
John has received his reward, his passing left two generations that love and serve the Lord. That is finishing strong.
PRAYER: Father, help us remain strong while fighting the good fight. With You living in us, we can remain faithful. Remind us of our final goal, and the importance of the legacy we will leave for others to build on. Amen.
